Practice Problem 5 of 8

The product theorem, with numbers

Problem
Two 1s Gaussians sit on the atoms of at separation bohr: () at and () at . Their product is a single Gaussian. Find its center and the prefactor .

Solution

Equal exponents put at the midpoint; the prefactor measures how much the two clouds overlap. Collapsing a two-center product onto one center is exactly why Gaussian integrals are fast — the whole reason we tolerate the wrong shape.
